Today, I’m going to share with you three surprising and FREE ways you can stand out from the competition and connect with your ideal clients.

  1. Do what you say you’re going to do.
We’ve all been there. Promises. Promises. Right? In today’s market if you simply keep your word, you stand out from the crowd.

During a recently family trip to a local splash pad, we’d stayed out really late and everyone was hungry for dinner. We took our chances — stopping at a nearby fast food joint to grab a meal in the drive-thru on the way home. Once I got everyone else settled with their meals, I went to open my burger... What did I find? Mustard... and cheese. The two things I’d said “No thanks” about, and not only that, I was missing the mayo I’d asked for. It was frustrating. My order had been confirmed on the screen, but there was a disconnect between my order, what they said they were going to do, and my actual experience.

So how do you stand out from competitors? It’s easy. Stand out by doing what you say you’re going to do.

  2. Care about people.

You might have forgotten, but the customers who come in your door, email you, or who DM your business on your social media accounts are real people with real problems just like you. Strive to treat each interaction as if you’re dealing with a real human being. Because you are.

I had the opportunity to experience this myself at an appointment with my midwife a few years ago. I had told her about some of the things that were stressing me out at the time, and do you want to know what she did? Instead of just checking my weight and checking on baby, making sure we wrapped up our appointment within the scheduled hour — she stopped and said, “Can I pray with you?”

Those few words showed me that she cared about me. It wasn’t just about finishing the appointment on time to move on to the next client. Our interaction was personal for her.

Stand out from the competition by showing people that you care. Ask how they’re doing and mean it. If someone is having a rough day, show concern and share a few words of encouragement. Caring about people will make you stand out.

  3. Be yourself.

I know this can be difficult. As business owners, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others in the same industry.

There might be five other bakeries in town and 10 other boutiques selling similar products to yours, and you are tempted to copy what they are doing because you think that will make you more successful.

    Stop right there.

There is only one of you in the world. You bring your own unique story and passion to the marketplace. You started your business. Your customers come to buy from you. The world needs you to be yourself. Not Amazon, not Walmart, not like the shop down the road.

If you are constantly trying to copy or mimic exactly what your competitors are doing, you might be missing out connecting with your ideal clients because they need someone like you.

Stand out from the competition by being yourself.
